Sumi otoshi (隅落)

Sumi: lateral, sideways, angle, corner.
Otoshi: fall.
Dušan Dreisig, 5º Dan Aikikai

To knock uke to the side. This is a set of techniques common in various martial arts, including aikido, judo, and jiu jitsu. They are appropriate as a response to a wide variety of attack situations.

In sumi otoshi uke is unbalanced towards his back and outwards (diagonally – sumi -), and then throw it to the ground – otoshi -. The attacking arm is usually controlled by its wrist, while Tori's free hand projects force onto the inside of Uke's arm or shoulder.

Sumi otoshi appears deceptively simple at first glance; in reality, it requires a considerable amount of skill to apply it with any degree of martial integrity. For example, the ability to effectively unbalance (kuzushi), precise control of timing, fluid movements outside uke's line of force and maintaining a balanced position at all times.
